Picturing America
Until May 31, the South Dakota Humanities Council (in collaboration with the South Dakota Art Museum) is offering a program that brings an art historian into your community’s school or library to speak about forty of the greatest American art masterpieces, including work from Grant Wood, Thomas Cole, and Frank Lloyd Wright.
The program is called Picturing America, and it is made possible by an award from the National Endowment for the Humanities in Washington DC. By utilizing these masterpieces, students and adults will have the opportunity to learn about our nation’s history and culture in an exciting new fashion. Scholars trained in VTS (Visual Thinking Strategies) will take students through this system of understanding art.
If your organization or community received the Picturing America award, you are eligible to apply for this program! An exhibit is available for use with speakers offered by the Speakers' Bureau program.
Participating Art Historians
John Day, University of South Dakota
Mr. Day received his Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Notre Dame and joined the art faculty at USD in 1976. Day served as the Director of University Art Galleries from 1977 until 2009.

Dr. Julie Schlarman, University of South Dakota
Dr. Schlarman received her Doctorate at the University of Southhampton in London after achieving a Bachelor of Arts in Art and two Masters Degrees in photography and Country House studies. She has worked in historic preservation as well as written several publications.

Dr. Lindsay Twa, Augustana College
Dr. Twa received her Bachelor degree in studio art and music from Concordia College then obtained her Masters and Doctorate from University of South Carolina-Chapel Hill. Besides instructing art at Augustana, she is the director of the Eide/Dalrymple Gallery.

Program Requirements
- A minimum audience of 35 people for presentations and expects the presentation to be held at a facility that has comfortable accommodations for the audience.
- The program must be scheduled for 45 minutes with time for questions and answers.
- A good faith effort in advertising the program and that the applicant organization goes beyond their members to publicize the event.
There is a $35 fee for each program, but the fee is waived if a school or school library is applying.

3. After SDHC recieves the application, they will send a confirmation letter and evaluation form to you and the presenter.
Please send your application 4 weeks in advance of the program.
