Please support the humanities in South Dakota
Our mission is made possible by you.
With help from thousands of people across the state, in 2009 we met our goal and established a $350,000 endowment through the National Endowment for the Humanities to support Center for the Book operations for years to come. This support allowed us to host a legendary Festival of Books in Deadwood, and it sent a South Dakota author on the road to speak about One Book that deserves to be read and discussed. It also ensured that today’s students are receiving the tools to become better readers and writers, and that they have opportunities to understand the importance of history and civic reflection. Grants were awarded to bring jazz musicians to schools, to support a symposium illuminating the work of sculptor Auguste Rodin, and to develop Book Bags on South Dakota subjects by South Dakota authors. Six communities experienced the excitement of “Between Fences,” a traveling Smithsonian exhibit. And Life on the Farm & Ranch, the fourth book in our South Dakota Stories series, was published to preserve the unique experiences of South Dakotans.
