Authors on the Road

Authors on the Road, our Festival of Books-affiliated school program, seeks to unite South Dakota students (kindergarten to college) and sites outside the festival with some of the best writers in the country.  The program offers support for schools, libraries, and other organizations across the state to host festival authors, from outstanding South Dakota writers to Pulitzer Prize-winning national attractions.  Participants are rewarded as the authors share the joys and challenges of the writing life.  In 2010, SDHC brought visits with such prized authors as 2010 Prairie Bud Award winner Peter Brown and Sibert Honor winner and National Geographic author Ann Bausum to roughly 3,000 individuals.  Read below to find an author who would work well for your organization and find out How to Apply for SDHC support.

Application Guidelines

  • Fill out an application form requesting up to $500 in assistance (the amount will depend on the author's fee, travel expenses, and other related costs of the visit).  Preference will be given to applicants that can provide additional assistance through their school district or a community match, and to those on SDHC's underserved counties list:

Counties that didn't host any SDHC programs in 2010 or 2011: Hanson, Jones, McPherson, Sanborn.

Counties that didn't host any SDHC programs in 2011: Day, Hamlin, Miner, Tripp.

  • Local program coordinators will be responsible for arranging author transportation, whether it be renting a vehicle for the author, picking the author up from a hotel, etc.  Responsibilites also include providing authors with materials they may need (such as a projector).  In some instances, author visits may fall outside the festival dates (Sept.28-30), in which case the applicant will be responsible for providing hotel accommodations.

  • Please call 688-6113 for inquiries about author fees and with any other questions. We will assist in arranging communications with the author you've selected and provide support for your program.
